A woman is struggling to sleep after her car was stolen from her driveway in the early hours of the morning.

Police confirmed the theft of a Mercedes GLA in Watford’s Holywell area on June 17 at 4am.

The owner told the Watford Observer that it has left “everyone living in the house traumatised”.

She said: “I want to raise the issue to let everyone know what the thieves are doing.”

The woman claimed that the previous day (Friday, June 16), four men and a woman went to her house to look at the Mercedes as it was up for sale.

They then took the car on a test drive, and it is at this point the woman believes they cloned a copy of the smart electric key.

Based on her doorbell footage, she believes two of the men returned in the early hours, unlocked the car and drove off.

She said: “I have never heard of this before, but Mercedes told me it is possible that gangs have a device that can deduct all the data from the key if they are near enough.”

A week on from the theft, the victim continued: “I am still shocked. I am not able to sleep at night because I am so panicked.

“I am always worrying what is happening outside.”

She said she used to put her phone on silent at night but now leaves it on to get the notifications in case the cameras pick up on any movement outside her house.

“It’s so sad, I do not think this country is safe anymore," she added.

“I have footage of them stealing the car and their faces are clear, I really don’t know why the police aren’t able to catch them.”

The woman has also claimed that the same type of theft happened to her friend who owns a Mercedes E Class.

She said: “They live in Watford too and had their car up for sale. These people came to view it, went for a test drive, but then came back in the early hours of the morning and stole it.”
