A primary school “at the heart of its community” is celebrating after another positive Ofsted inspection heaped praise on its pupils.
Ascot Road in Holywell was judged to have remained ‘good’ following an assessment in February – with kids noted as being “confident, happy, spirited individuals”.
Leaders were found to have adopted a well-ordered curriculum, with reading being prioritised as pupils are introduced to high-quality books as soon as they start.
Inspectors wrote: “Pupils read a wide range of books that reflect the rich diversity of their community.
“Pupils understand that everyone is different and that people should be ‘allowed to be themselves’ and be accepted.”
They learn about lots of cultures and religions, enjoy playing at after-school clubs such as cooking, computer coding, and cricket, and like attending celebration assemblies.

“Leaders have ensured that pupils’ personal development is a priority,” inspectors added.
“Pupils develop a good understanding of the different cultures, relationships and family units they may come across.
“They enjoy the responsibility of being a member of the ‘learner voice council.’ Pupils develop a comprehensive understanding of how to use the internet safely and the potential risks.
“Pupils leave the school equipped with the ability to build positive relationships and contribute to life in modern Britain well.”
However, the academy free school, which has 376 pupils, was told in some areas teachers are not consistently ensuring they revisit pupils’ prior learning, which should include subject-specific vocabulary.
Some subject leaders are also new to their roles and have not checked fully that the curriculum is being consistently taught in line with their plans. Leaders were advised to support them with appropriate training to ensure pupils achieve as well as they should.
Headteacher Cathy Elsley said: “I was pleased with the many positive aspects of the report, especially the recognition that our school is at the heart of our rich and diverse community.
“I am very proud of the staff and community of Ascot Road who ensure the children leave school equipped to build positive relationships and contribute to life in modern Britain."
