Watford General Hospital’s NHS trust says it is “working hard to ensure disruption is minimised” as its junior doctors strike.

The town's hospital will remain open this week despite  national strike action between 7am today (March 13) and 7am on Thursday (March 16).

West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust asked people needing emergency care to arrive as normal, although they are asked to use non-hospital services such as calling 111 or visiting their GP where possible.

Patients with a planned visit have been warned "you may be contacted directly to rearrange your procedure".

Anyone who is not contacted is expected to come in as normal.

The action will be the longest ever period of strikes by junior doctors after the BMA launched an advertising campaign which said junior doctors could earn more money “serving coffee than saving patients”.

Ballots had been cast over six weeks between January 9 and February 20.

77.49% of people entitled to vote voted to strike, with 98% of returned ballots in favour of walking out.
