For those heading to the polling stations an approved photo ID will now be needed when placing a vote.
From May 2023, it will be a legal requirement across the UK to produce an approved ID such as a photo driving licence or a passport. For a full list of acceptable IDs, see Watford Borough Council's website.
Expired IDs will be accepted, but only if they show a true likeness to the holder.
Those without any acceptable forms of ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC).
Applications for a VAC will be open from a new government website from Monday, January 16.
People will be expected to include proof of identity when applying to do a postal vote. And they will be expected to make a new application every three years.

It is expected that online applications for a postal vote will be on the government website from July 2023.
Watford Borough Council chief executive Donna Nolan said: “Ensuring that every resident has access to accurate information and the ability to vote is crucial.
“We will keep our residents informed of all updates, so that on election day, they are fully prepared to exercise their right to vote.”
