A “spineless” drink driver has been jailed after killing a Watford fan in a hit-and-run.
Andrew Leonard, 47, overtook a Vauxhall Corsa before hitting motorcyclist David Greenleaf, who was riding in front of the car.
The collision in Henley Road, Berkshire, knocked Mr Greenleaf from his motorbike and fatally injured him before Leonard drove off.
The victim, who was aged 60, was rushed to hospital but died a month later.
It happened on September 22, 2021, following which Leonard was charged and pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving whilst over the prescribed amount of alcohol and failing to stop after a collision.
Leonard, of Bakers Lane in Maidenhead, was sentenced to four years and four months’ prison at Reading Crown Court on Friday, January 6.
Following the hearing, Mr Greenleaf’s family said: “Life is sometimes very cruel and this is an occasion when a thoughtless, spineless individual has caused needless grief and pain to many people.
“David is sadly missed by all his family, friends and the local community in general.
“David was a hard working caring individual who served his community as a postman for over 30 years. He cared for and loved his daughter Helen and grandchildren. His past time passion was Watford FC who he followed home and away for the majority of his life.”
They added: “David was taken from us all far too early. No one and certainly no sentence can bring David back. I and all his family would like to thank Thames Valley and Hampshire Police for their professionalism and perseverance in bringing this individual to justice. RIP David.”
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Joy Jarvis, added: “Despite drinking earlier in the day, Leonard still chose to get behind the wheel of his car and drive.
“As a result, this case now serves as an example of the tragic consequences that drink driving can have.”
DC Jarvis added that drink driving makes motorists far more likely to be involved in a serious crash.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of David Greenleaf at this difficult time,” they added.
