A man has been charged following a burglary at a popular Watford town centre café.

Ocean Bells coffee shop in High Street was broken into at around 5.13am on Wednesday, January 4, before almost £200 was stolen from the till.

Herts Police attended and found a man in an underpass on George Street where he was arrested.

This afternoon (January 6), police confirmed that Jason Turner, from Brighton, East Sussex, was subsequently charged with burglary and possession of a bladed article.

The 39-year-old appeared at Hatfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 5, and was released on bail with conditions. He is next due to appear at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on January 30.

On the same morning as the Ocean Bells break-in, another town centre shop was reportedly broken into between 3am and 7am, though it is currently unclear if police are linking the incidents.

It also comes after Herts Police warned of six house burglaries in eight days across Hertsmere – including one in Prowse Avenue, Bushey Heath, and another in Woodlands Road, Bushey.
