As films and adverts show us puppies being given as gifts, there is one charity that urges us to make sure that animals can be well cared for throughout their lives.
National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT), based in Watford, wants "every pet to thrive in a loving home".
The trust rehomes pets whose owners can no longer look after them or are rescued, and also provides educational and practical support to animal lovers in the community.

The centre takes in, on average, 450 animals a year and can have just over 50 animals at a time looked after at the centre.
It houses mainly dogs; this includes many greyhounds who come to NAWT when they stop winning races. There are also cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Watford Observer asked the centre manager Jackie de Friez about the charity’s work in the town.
Is this time of year particularly critical for abandoned/unwanted pets?
Not particularly. This last year has been very tough for so many people and we have seen that in the number of pets given up where the owner has passed away or lost their home or job.
Is the cost-of-living crisis having a particular effect?
Yes, the cost of everything has gone up from cat litter to heating, everything is costing us more.
What advice do you give people who want to rehome a pet? What qualities do they need?
Go to a rescue centre and just talk to them about what you want and what they can offer you. It’s finding the right match.
What advice would you give to those who want to get a pet?
Please think of the long-term commitment that you are taking on as that pet will be part of your family and you have the responsibility of its care on your shoulders for what could be up to 20 years.
How would you appeal for donations?
Text: NAWTWATFORD5 to 70085 to donate £5. To make a higher value donation, of up to £20, just add the sum to the end i.e. NAWTWATFORD20.
