Full disclosure: we don’t believe in vampires. However, a bizarre hashtag has emerged online with over 200 posts and comments about blood-suckers walking amongst us in Watford.

It is unclear how much alcohol has or hasn’t been consumed by those involved in #WatfordVampire.

Alarmingly, some appear to be (sort of) serious.

The earliest report, posted on Nextdoor, alleges that a “local vampire hunter” had seen an increase in activity in Watford.

It claimed a closed-down town centre cafe was the site of suspicious activity at night, although others pointed out people may just live above it.

A friend of the would-be Van Helsing told the Watford Observer the rise in activity is “pretty typical for this time of year because of the longer nights”.

“He said there's been sightings in Cassiobury Park of a grey figure at night as well.”

It was not long before images of the beast emerged.

Among a number of unconfirmed sightings, a woman reported seeing him on the way home after a concert and a man noticed the same figure in a graveyard after he “finished a pint or three”.

When the question arose as to why the vampire was frequenting a cemetery in the first place, it was claimed the hunters “are still trying to gather information at this stage”.

One local man suspected a reclusive neighbour.

He said: “Could HE be the Watford Vampire? Anyone know where I can buy a good stake or a silver bullet?”

Despite the number of people commenting and posting about the sightings, most seem to fall on the side of the doubters.

The reports were widely described as “absolute tosh”, “ridiculous”, and a “wind-up”.
