Drivers of the most polluting vehicles will be charged to travel anywhere around London from the end of next summer.
The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is being expanded by the Mayor of London from August 29 to cover the whole of the capital, including Greater London.
Drivers who have a vehicle that does not comply with minimum emissions standards face paying a daily charge of £12.50 to drive within the ULEZ – and it does not matter whether you live in London or not.

Whether or not a vehicle is liable for the charge depends on how much nitrogen dioxide it emits.
For diesel cars and vans to avoid the charge they must generally have been registered from 2016, while most petrol models registered from 2006 are exempt.
Mayor Sadiq Khan says he wants to expand the ULEZ to boost air quality despite some heavy opposition from people living in outer London.
The ULEZ is currently enforced on North and South Circular boundaries using automatic number plate recognition cameras – like with the congestion charge, drivers can pay Transport for London (TfL) on the day or in advance.
While the full practicalities of the ULEZ expansion are still to be revealed, it is likely ANPR cameras will be installed in roads that straddle the Greater London border, such as Hillingdon, Harrow, and Barnet.
Below is a list of the major roads that some drivers will need watch out for as it involves crossing the Hertfordshire border into London – and therefore where cameras are likely to be installed in order for TfL to properly enforce the ULEZ.
- High Road and Heathbourne Road from Bushey Heath towards Stanmore
- Oxhey Lane from Carpenders Park towards Harrow
- Sandy Lane/Watford Road from South Oxhey towards Northwood
- Rickmansworth Road from Batchworth towards Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood
- Rickmansworth Road from Batchworth towards Harefield
- A41 Elstree Hill roundabout towards routes into Greater London
- A1 Stirling Corner in Borehamwood towards routes into Greater London
The above list is not all of the roads that cross the border and it remains to be seen how TfL plans to enforce the entire border when the ULEZ expansion launches.
