A burglar has been jailed after breaking into the home of a woman in her 90s and sleeping in her spare bedroom overnight.

Frank Donoghue, of no fixed address, was found in a bedroom of the Bricket Wood property before he was confronted and ran off.

The 40-year-old took several items with him – but forensic evidence identified Donoghue as the suspect and he was subsequently arrested and charged.

Detective Sergeant Adam Haines said: “Burglary is extremely traumatic for victims and this incident has had a lasting impact on the elderly lady involved.

“The personal statement read out in court detailed just how much she had been affected.”

Donoghue, who police say is from St Albans, committed the crime in February this year while serving a suspended sentence.

Having pleaded guilty to burglary and possession of a class A drug (Heroin), he was sentenced to three and a half years’ prison on November 1 at St Albans Crown Court.
