The Watford Observer is again delighted to team up with its friends at Watford Museum to look at some structures or objects from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated. Today we recall something that had disappeared, but was discovered again – a well dating back to the 1400s.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said:
“In September 1974, an old well was discovered at 195 High Street, which is roughly opposite the Museum. At the time, the site was occupied by Stapletons Tyres.
“It was a flint-lined well, but appeared not to have been completed and was thought to be 15th century.
“The lining made it an interesting find as many of the previous wells discovered in Watford have been brick-lined.
“The other flint-lined well that we know about was discovered in 1999 very close to St Mary's Church.”
Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
