Motorway lanes have been closed after emergency services were called to reports a man had fallen from a bridge.

Police confirmed they received a report at around 4.30pm today (Friday, October 28) of concerns for the welfare of a man on the anti-clockwise carriageway of the M25 in Hertfordshire.

The reports stated a man had fallen from a bridge, the police said.

The M25 is shut anti-clockwise between junction 17 for Maple Cross and 16 for the M40.

There are delays of over an hour with major traffic disruption in the Rickmansworth area and routes close to the M25 in this area.

Emergency services are currently in attendance.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers are working to deal with the incident as quickly as possible and reopen lanes where possible, however closures are currently expected to remain some time further.

“We would urge motorists to avoid the area where possible. We thank them for their patience at this time.”

As of 6.50pm, National Highways have estimated delays will last up to one and a half hours and have said there are now seven miles of congestion.

They have also offered motorists alternative routes to take.

National Highways has advised road users to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Leave the M25 at J17 and at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A405.
  • Follow the A405 to the roundabout with the A412 and take the 2nd exit onto the A412.
  • Continue on the A412 to the junction with the A40 at Denham and turn left onto the A40 towards the M40 J1.
  • At the M40 J1 roundabout take the 4th exit onto the M40 northbound towards the M25.
  • Follow the M40 back to the M25 J16 and rejoin the M25 anti-clockwise at J16.
