Plans for nine "affordable" homes on the site of a former plant nursery have been refused.

The development was proposed to be built on green belt land in Chequers Lane, between Garston and Bricket Wood.

The land, which is close to the M25, M1, and A405, had been used as a horticultural nursery - Waterdell Nurseries - up until 2005 and there is still a polytunnel and some storage containers on site.

An application was submitted to St Albans District Council earlier this year to build homes in the form of three blocks of two-storeys.

The properties were proposed to be affordable but the council’s housing department said it could not comment definitely on the plans because of a lack of information about the proposed tenure of the homes.

Some objections were lodged by neighbours with concerns including impact on green belt, overdevelopment, loss of privacy, and overlooking.

Hertfordshire County Council also had doubts due to the 60mph speed limit in Chequers Lane and lack of pavement.

The council refused the scheme citing it “inappropriate” development in the green belt, also indicating it was not a “sensible” location for affordable housing due to a lack of local services and public transport.
