But in a cruel twist of fate, Mr Melinek, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last May.
His family announced that he died on Friday, October 21.
Mr Melinek’s daughter, Elizabeth, said: “We are so incredibly proud of him.
“As he passed away, we promised we would continue to raise more money for Cancer Research UK.
“As he always said, ‘It’s not if we find a cure, it’s when. How quickly, is all down to funding’.”

Dubbed the Piano Grandad he turned to playing his beloved instrument when his wife passed away.
When lockdown put a stop to his weekly concerts to his peers at the University of the Third Age, his granddaughter, Bella, posted TikTok videos of him playing so his talents could still be shared.
The videos went viral and have since been viewed 1.6 billion times and Mr Melinek became an internet sensation.
Speaking this time last year, the former dentist, said: “It’s devastating for so many people because so many people are affected.
“But I’m certain that cancer will be cured one day, whether it’s in ten years or 100. It’s in our hands.
“If we donate enough money there will be a cure. I have no doubt it will be conquered.”
Despite undergoing major surgery and months of chemotherapy treatment, the father of five continued to support Cancer Research UK and Stand Up To Cancer, determined to hit his £20,000 fundraising target in the charity’s 20th year.
Each time he reached another milestone in his treatment, the grandfather of 15, uploaded updates of his progress on TikTok and YouTube with a reminder to support the charity that remained close to his heart.
Alan’s commitment to the cause saw him nominated for several accolades and he was recently shortlisted for ITV’s Pride of Britain Awards.
