The storms that swept across our area yesterday led to localised flooding in places - and also resulted in some spectacular pictures.

The Met Office tweeted this morning that around 40,000 lightning strikes happened across the UK on Sunday, which it said was “quite unusual for late October”.

Watford weather watcher John Bowe reported that more than 1,000 strikes had been recorded at a distance between 0 and 45km of the town.

Jacqueline Sharp sent in the pictures below of flooding in Links Way, Croxley Green, while the torrential conditions also forced the closure of the A41 because of flooding between the Hunton Bridge and Dome roundabouts.

Some of the flashes across the sky – and the glowing aftermath that followed – were captured by Watford Observer camera club members Angela Scott, Colin Parkins and Laurie Summers.
