A Watford nurse has said it was "absolutely amazing" to be honoured for her efforts at the RCN Nursing Awards 2022.
Andrea Hone was presented with the 'Commitment to Carers' award on October 6, during a ceremony held at the RCN (Royal College of Nursing) headquarters in London.
As Carers lead, Ms Hone had acted quickly when a National Inpatient Survey showed that the West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust had scored below average for considering patients’ home situation and involving patients in discharge decisions.
Andrea said: "I am passionate about making a difference for our carers, so to win an award for this is absolutely amazing.
"To get the recognition for the hard work that has been carried out to develop the service is an honour."
The nurse worked with Watford General Hospital's integrated discharge team and Hertfordshire County Council to start the 'Connecting with Carers' Discharge Project.
Due to her work, carers now receive more support when their loved one is admitted to hospital, and recieve two follow-up calls after their loved one has been discharged.
Andrea added: "But as well as being proud, I’m really excited for the future as this will showcase the importance of supporting carers not only in my organisation, but nationally too.
"And it will give me opportunities to improve the service further."
