An underpass that runs under Watford ring could shut permanently and be replaced with a pedestrian crossing.

The subway that connects Queens Road and atria Watford shopping centre has been described as “unwelcoming” for pedestrians while cycling is banned.

After a previous consultation found the ring road to be a “barrier” to accessing the town centre from Queens Road, Watford Borough Council is now seeking more feedback on a proposal which it believes will encourage people to visit the area.

The idea put forward is to install a signalled crossing on the ring road that would allow people to cross safely.

It could result in the existing underpass shutting – replicating what has happened at the junction with Clarendon Road – or it could be an additional crossing point. The council says no final decisions have been made.

Another new crossing is proposed on the ring road by the junction with Upton Road.

The council is also considering turning the ring road into a two-way road and banning traffic on the flyover. This forms part of its Transforming Travel document.
