Pressure from neighbours led an off-licence to withdraw its bid to sell alcohol round the clock.

But SSS Food and Drinks still faces opposition in its new bid for a premises licence for its store in Queens Road in Watford.

Objectors warned of a “huge risk” of alcohol-fuelled violence after the shop made an initial application in August to sell alcohol 24/7 at the former Mood cafe premises.

More than a dozen objections were lodged to Watford Borough Council and a petition with 31 signatures has also been presented.

Following discussions with police, the timings have been revised to sell alcohol between 8am and 11pm only, both in-store and online.

But some neighbours still fear alcohol sales will fuel anti-social behaviour and cause noise issues.

Police are not opposing the licensing application as long as the applicant sticks to a list of conditions, which include installing CCTV and restrictions on the quantity and strength of alcohol sold.

However, some remain unconvinced by the proposed conditions. According to a council document summarising representations from objectors, the shop will attract “unfavourable and antisocial behaviour and people” to the area.

Selling alcohol would also “further increase” crime and disorder, footfall, noise, and nuisance created by delivery vehicles parking and leaving.

Others have pointed out that “enormous” problems with antisocial behaviour have “drastically reduced” since a pub in the area shut and they do not want to risk a return of such behaviour.  

Further objections highlight Queens Road already has convenience stores and therefore there is “absolutely no need” for another.

The council’s sub-licensing committee will decide whether to grant the shop a premises licence on October 6.

Members will consider whether the application will comply with the four licensing objectives which include the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance, and the protection of children from harm.
