A development of five affordable and sustainable homes in Oxhey has won an award.

The collection of properties in Riverside Road were among the winners at the Housing Design Awards for 2022.

The ceremony honours the “very best” examples of new housing in the UK, demonstrating how architects, developers and local authorities can work together to create new homes.

Completed earlier this year, the Riverside Road homes, designed by Bell Phillips Architects, are described as energy efficient, with high levels of insulation, PV panels on the roof and an air source heat pump which ensures the homes are well heated and warm in the colder months.

The development, created on a site formerly of garages and now managed by Watford Community Housing, picked up the Richard Feilden Award, which promotes excellence and sustainability.

Watford mayor Peter Taylor said in the summer: “Four families have already moved into the homes which are designed to have very low bills over their lifetime. The rising costs of fuel makes it more important than ever that the new homes we create now will cost very little to run.

“It’s important we continue to develop schemes like this, as green homes like these point the way towards future housebuilding in our town.”
