This picture is almost a century old and it shows what is now one of the major roads on the outskirts of Watford. Can you imagine what the reaction of the drivers would be if it were possible to magic them to the same point now?

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week's image is of what became the A41.

The museum's volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: "This is North Western Avenue at its junction with Hartspring Lane, in November 1928. I believe it looks northwards as the footpath shown on the left-hand side was added when the road was constructed (and is still there).

This road was opened in the 1920s as a by-pass for a growing Watford. It was originally numbered the A4088, then A500, and today is the A41 and we have a large roundabout here.

"Many people may remember this junction as ‘Cox's Corner’ after a business close by. Costco is located on that site now."

Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
