Motorists have been warned to plan ahead after emergency roadworks started causing heavy traffic.
Two-way traffic lights have been installed along the A404 Rickmansworth Road in Chorleywood.
Hertfordshire Highways says Cadent Gas is carrying out “urgent repairs” near the junction with Chorleywood Cricket Club.
The company has been given until Tuesday, September 13 to complete the work.

With schools now back, the work is causing greater disruption with queues in both directions on Chorleywood Road, especially during rush hour and school drop-off and pick-up times.
The county council’s highways team has warned drivers to plan ahead and expect delays.

Elsewhere in Chorleywood, multi-way signals will be in place this weekend (September 10 and 11) at the junction of Shire Lane and Lower Road due to work by Virgin Media.
Meanwhile, nearby Solesbridge Lane will be closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Monday September 19.
It is to allow BT to carry out work to telegraph poles.
Solesbridge Lane will also be closed overnight – between 10pm on September 25 and 5.30am on September 26 – for work being undertaken by Thames Water.
