Watford mayor Peter Taylor has challenged the county council over measures to keep school uniform costs down.
Government guidance states that from autumn this year schools are required to limit branded items and limit the amount families must pay.
The mayor challenged Hertfordshire County Council to explain what measures are being taken to make sure every school in the county is implementing these new rules.

The county council said school uniforms are not something local authorities have control over, but that it has amplified the government guidance in communication with schools.
Council leader Cllr Richard Roberts said: “I personally think that a uniform can provide a great sense of pride and belonging in a school, but that does not have to be an expensive uniform.”
School uniforms should be as affordable as possible. Government guidance to schools asks them to limit the number of branded items and find ways of reducing the cost of uniforms.

Cllr Roberts also urged parents to speak to their school to access support, such as second-hand uniform sales and funds for eligible families.
He also highlighted existing support the council offers such as free school meals, travel, childcare, school milk and holiday camps.
