- A lorry caught fire on the M1 this afternoon closing the southbound carriageway in Hertfordshire
- Firefighters battled the blaze on the southbound side near St Albans at around 2.30pm (August 24)
- Photos showed the cab and front of the trailer destroyed
- Oil has also spilled over the carriageway which has kept the M1 shut southbound between junction 7 (for the A4146 and 6A for the M25 for 7 hours and counting
- The lorry is being recovered but due to the oil spill, the road needs to be resurfaced.
- National Highways says the M1 is set to stay closed throughout the night
- The closure has caused major disruption with queues continuing as of 9pm
- Drivers are being taken off at junction 7 and onto the A414 towards the Park Street roundabout
- Motorists are then asked to take the A405 towards Watford, where there are junctions to join the M25 at junction 21A or the M1 south at junction 6 in Bricket Wood
- Drivers can expect lengthy delays if travelling on the M1 south with delays back to junction 9 for Redbourn
