Watford is in desperate need of a designated north-south cycle lane.
The Abbey Way sidesteps the Watford metropolis - great as a bypass, but no use for riders going to and from the town centre.
How ridiculous then that the best Watford could come up with in its bid for rare cash grants available was a proposal for a low traffic scheme on the Cassiobury estate.
Academic, a wasted opportunity - it just rubber-stamped what it already is. Unsurprisingly the scheme was thrown out and not chosen in the submission Hertfordshire County Council made for a chunk of the £7 billion central government funding provision for safe streets.
Far better would have been to spend the money on a safe cycleway along St Albans Road to put an end to the toll.
