A woman was taken to hospital after allegedly being headbutted and having her ribs broken during a racially aggravated attack.

The woman’s husband, who was also attacked at Watford’s King George V Playing Fields, says he has been frustrated after going back-and-forth with police for over a month.

Police released an appeal yesterday (August 1) calling for witnesses after the man was reportedly barged into several times and racially abused on June 24 at around 6.10pm.

Officers had said no one was hurt, but the man, who wished to remain unnamed, said his wife had to visit hospital twice after suffering several injuries.

He claimed they were walking their dog like they do every evening when a teenager began to hurl verbal abuse.

The man has showed the Watford Observer video footage of the two being yelled at. According to him, he was called “white trash” and faced more racial abuse.

Police originally said two other people were involved in the row – a black teenager in his late teens and a black woman believed to be in her 40s or 50s – but the force has today clarified that “a group of people” were there.

According to the victim, his wife was headbutted and punched in the face, which resulted in her splitting her lip.

He added: “She fell to the floor and was kicked on the head and stomach, on the back. She ended up with two broken ribs.

“She has a metal rod in her back, so they (the hospital) had to check her to make sure she wouldn’t be paralysed.”

The husband said there was “nothing I could do” as he was reportedly being barged into several times by a teenage boy at the same time.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has now confirmed that the wife sustained “ABH-level injuries”, while the man was uninjured.

PC Anthony Muller, who is investigating, said: “Enquiries have been carried out to try and trace those involved and these are continuing at this time.

“As part of the investigation, I am appealing for independent witness accounts and would ask anyone who saw the incident to please come forward.”
