Sexual offences reported in Watford have soared 40 per cent in a year to the highest level since records began.
Herts Police recorded 285 sexual offences in the town in the year to March 2022, up from 203 last year, Office for National Statistics figures show.
It is the highest number since records began in 2003, at which point there were 95 reports.

Herts Police has said victims having more confidence to report incidents could have contributed to the rise.
A spokesperson said: “Hertfordshire Constabulary takes all reports of sexual assault seriously, no matter what the circumstances are.
Being a victim of sexual assault is NEVER your fault. We take all reports seriously, no matter what the circumstances or how long ago the offence occurred and have specialist officers on hand to provide support and advice.

“We fully understand the devasting impact such an experience can have on victims and we want everyone, both male and female, of any sexual orientation, to feel confident in being able to report incidents.
“We have specialist officers on hand to provide advice and support, including to members of the LGBT+ community, and will always strive to do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.”
