Children’s safety was compromised at an after-school club due to inadequate staff checks, an inspection has found.
On June 16 Ofsted found that Energy Kidz at Ascot Road, which runs a breakfast and after school club at Ascot Road Community Free School, did not have robust arrangements for recruiting staff.
Energy Kidz runs clubs across 22 counties and at 120 schools.

The report said: “The arrangements for the recruitment of staff are not robust.
“For example, the provider has not obtained references for all staff to verify their overall suitability.
“Staff whose full suitability has not been checked are left unsupervised with children on occasion, which compromises children’s safety.”
However, inspectors said DBS checks have been obtained for all staff and staff have relevant training to keep their knowledge of safeguarding up to date, including knowing the signs of concern and their responsibilities to report them.
Energy Kidz CEO Renee Bowman said: “Energy Kidz prides itself on providing a safe and enjoyable provision for children in our care.
“At all times children’s safety and enjoyment are and continue to be our number one priority.
“We follow safer recruitment guidelines.
“Should there ever be a scenario where certain reference checks are taking longer, our policy is to ensure individuals are not left in vulnerable situations with the children in our care.”
Outside of safeguarding, the report was positive.
It says: “The club provides a different environment in contrast to children's day at school.
“Staff ensure that children can socialise and relax with their friends.
“Children's physical health is well supported. Children are creative.
“Staff support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities effectively to enjoy their time at the club.”
“Parents and children speak positively about their experiences at the club. They comment that staff make them feel welcome and how their children love to attend.”
Inspectors also found children were polite and would clear away their plates when finished, while also showing good manners and respect to their friends.
Kids also said they liked attending the club so they can socialise.
Energy Kidz has said an action plan has been sent to Ofsted addressing the required improvements.
