Police have issued a warning after a rise in vehicle thefts in Watford.

Keyless entry vehicles are being targeted while catalytic converter thieves are operating in the area as well.

So far this year, the number of vehicles being stolen in Hertfordshire is 18 per higher than last year, and although thefts from vehicles are slightly down countywide, police say Watford and Dacorum have seen increases.

Inspector Nicola Dean, from the crime reduction unit, said: “Keyless entry vehicles are being targeted by criminals using signal jacking devices, which pick up the fob signal and use it to unlock and start vehicles.

“Using a signal blocking fob pouch or storing your fob in a metal box will help prevent theft of keyless vehicles.

“Leaving valuable items on display in a vehicle will also attract the attention of opportunistic thieves, so please remove any items which may encourage a thief, such as bags, boxes, coats or loose change.”

Meanwhile, catalytic converters on car models such as the pre 2008 Honda Jazz, Toyota Prius (2004 to 2016) and Toyota Arius (2012 to 2018) are most at risk of being taken by thieves, police add.
