Having spent a few weeks this year in Spain I thought readers and possibly our government officials would be interested to hear that as from the beginning of April this year their government reduced forecourt pump prices by 20 cents per litre. Recently they have announced that this will continue until at least the end of September and this from a country that has suffered badly from lack of tourism income due to Covid.
In addition they are capping any increases on gas and electricity prices expected following the invasion of Ukraine resulting in the general supply problems.
I would suggest that rather then look at imposing windfall taxes, Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak should be speaking to the energy suppliers rather than the distributors in an attempt to reduce prices at source.
Of course they could simply reduce VAT on fuel which effectively is a tax on tax!
