Hi, I’m Harley a five-year-old Cocker Spaniel/Poodle crossbreed. I’m looking for a very special owner who’s experienced in handling and training a dog like me with a lot of love to give but also ‘resource-guarding’ issues.
This means I’m very protective of any treasures I find - sticks, bits of plastic I find on walks; items accidentally dropped on the floor; or a toy I’m worried you're going to take away.
I’ll need ongoing management to help prevent this behaviour. This may include pet gates around the home to create safe areas, muzzling for vet visits and in busy public areas, and keeping me on the lead on walkies.
But I’m doing well with staff here at the National Animal Welfare Trust, love attention and am very affectionate. I’m told I communicate well through body language and show when I’m uncomfortable with what you’re doing and need space.
Please understand this behaviour comes from a lack of confidence and fear that my precious things will be taken away. It will take time for me to de-stress from the kennel environment and learn to trust my new family. Because of this I can’t live with children or other pets but I can socialise with dogs of a similar size with careful introductions and supervision.
If you’re that special person who understands dog body language and has experience of using reward-based training to manage resource-guarding in a kind, positive way, email reception@nawt.org.uk or call 0208 950 0177 (option 2).
