An annual carnival inspired by Rio and Notting Hill could “put Watford on the tourism map”.
Jomo Oparah, the chief executive of events management company Mojo Fusion, teased back in January that he was working with Watford Borough Council on the logistics of hosting a carnival.
He plans to hold Watford Carnival at Radlett Road Playing Fields on July 30 this year – and is waiting for approval to hold a parade of floats and dancers through nearby streets.
Mr Oparah explained that it will be a free event aimed at promoting the diverse cultural heritage of the town and providing a fun family day out.
With talks ongoing, it is estimated that potentially over 1,000 people may attend.
Taking inspiration from popular carnivals such as the ones in Notting Hill or Rio, there are plans to have 300 participants in carnival costumes on floats.
Instagram adverts already published show a range of DJs and a selection of food for attendees.
Mr Oparah said: “This carnival is going to be a yearly event to help put Watford on the tourism map, help promote local businesses and most importantly foster sociocultural interaction amongst residents of Watford.”
The carnival will be a space to celebrate cultures, music, dance, fashion, food, local businesses and more.
He hopes the carnival will become an annual event and hopes to release further information soon.
Earlier this year Mr Oparah opened Mojo Fusion, with a barbershop at the Queens Road headquarters that offered free haircuts throughout the year to primary school-aged children in Watford during term-time.
At the time, he explained that the business venture will be serving the people of Watford and is focused on creating a unique atmosphere that allows communities to build and unite.
Mr Oparah says that he is still scouting for sponsors and volunteers to come on board and support the upcoming carnival planned.
