An African retailer requires ‘major improvement’ after a food hygiene inspection.

African Food, which is classed as a retailer operating at a private Watford address, was inspected by the Food Standards Agency on November 18.

However inspectors gave the place a rating of 1/5, ranking it under ‘major improvement necessary’.

Inspections are to make sure that food hygiene is up to code and holds good food safety standards.

Ratings on a scale are then issued to rank the hygiene standards at the time of inspection.

Five is top of the scale, meaning the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law and zero is at the bottom of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

Specifically, both the hygienic food handling and cleanliness of facilities at African Food were given the highest ratings of ‘very good’ but it was the management of food safety that was a concern and ‘major improvement’ was necessary.

The management of food safety evaluates whether a system or checks are in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, there is evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
