A Watford man has been ordered to pay more than £1,300 for failing to wear a face covering on a bus in Harrow.
Derek Lewis, of Fairfield Avenue, was slapped with a £1,110 fine for not wearing a covering without a reasonable excuse on a 182 bus in High Road.
The 54-year-old was sentenced on November 24 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court following the incident on March 23 this year.
As well as the £1,110 fine he was also ordered to pay a £110 victim surcharge and £100 costs.
It comes as new rules were recently introduced meaning people who refuse to wear coverings on public transport could face fines of £200 and up.
Anyone who repeatedly flouts the rules could face a maximum charge of £6,400.
Mask wearing has remained compulsory since Covid restrictions eased in July but TfL saw compliance wane when the rule was no longer legally enforcable.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said “we have been operating with one hand tied behind our back” but "wholeheartedly" welcomed the government's decision.
