New recycling bins have been placed at a “health hazard” site after overflowing bins commonly attracted rats and had glass strewn on the ground.
South Oxhey councillor Steve Cox urged Three Rivers District Council to take action to the overflowing waste bins outside Erskine House on Oxhey Drive after he addressed the problem last month (October 9).
The Observer also reported the problem after concerned grandmother Heather Pomroy told the paper that the bins overflow “nearly every week”.
Now Cllr Cox states there are “early signs” that this has assisted the situation, but he states that now Thrive Homes may need to do more to tackle fly-tipping in the area after spotting a mattress and tyres during a check-up.
Cllr Cox previously called Erskine House a clear “problem area” but he hopes that by having it cleaned up “it will be respected more instead of being used as a dumping ground”.
After Cllr Cox reporting the issue and the Observer’s report, the site was cleared up the site five days later.
Now the extra recycling bins at Erskine House provided by the council is hoped to prevent further littering.
The councillor said he was “disappointed” that the council decided to “blame the residents” after the council shared a statement that it is encouraging residents to “recycle and dispose of their waste responsibly”.
Cllr Cox believes there are some instances where people travel down to the rubbish hotspot to dispose of their waste.
Following further sightings of larger fly-tipped items, he added: “I have encouraged Thrive Homes to do their job and tackle any fly-tipping there.”
