A ten-year plan to restore and renovate the Watford section of the River Colne has been approved.

The ‘Rediscovering the River Colne’ project, which was developed by both Watford Borough Council and environmental organisation Groundwork, will move into its first phase between 2021 and 2024.

Plans approved on Monday (October 4) include improving the Colne’s access and landscape, improving its adjoining habitats, and implementing a range of engagement and monitoring activities.

It is hoped that the project can attract more biodiversity to the area, and that volunteers will be involved in monitoring the water and population count at the river.

Groundwork will lead the first phase, which will improve the habitat and access to the Colne from public areas near to the river, including: Oxhey Park, Knutsford Playing Fields, Radlett Road Playing Fields, Timberlake Allotments, Waterfields Recreation Ground, Riverside Recreation Ground, Riverside Park and Lairage Land.

Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “We’re thrilled to give the go-ahead on the Rediscovering the River Colne project.

“Watford Borough Council are working hard to make the town a sustainable, healthy and thriving place to live – which can only be done by ensuring that the surrounding natural areas are clean, healthy and biodiverse.

“We’re excited for the next 10 years, and can’t wait to see the River Colne flourish once again.”

The council say that detailed designs and permitting has begun for four sites – Knutsford Playing Fields, Timberlake Allotments, Radlett Road Playing Fields and Waterfield Recreation Ground.
