Proposals for former Bushey Country Club confirmed

But a secondary school that would have been Hertfordshire's biggest will be created elsewhere.

Hertsmere Borough Council's draft local plan has revealed Bushey Country Club has been deemed a suitable site to construct new homes to meet Government housing targets.

The plan states "around 200" homes would be built with a mixtures of sizes and types.

The council adds at least 40 per cent of new homes will be designated as affordable housing.

Alongside homes, a community hub has also been lined up for the site with Bushey Museum potentially relocated here from its current site in Rudolph Road.

The council says it wants to create a public open space that is accessible to all users and age groups, with a new route to Merry Hill Woodland Trust Land.

Earlier this year, the council held a virtual meeting in which it shared proposals it had come up with for the country club site, which shut as a country club and golf course in 2018.

These plans included a new secondary school which would have been the biggest in Hertfordshire, accommodating nearly 2,000 pupils.

This idea came as a surprise to locals. The Observer learnt the Bushey Country Club Consultation Group - set up specifically to look at future uses of the site - never suggested, recommended, or even mentioned a school in its final report about the possible future use of the land.

But in June, the Bushey Conservatives announced the plans for a school had been "scrapped" with a council spokesperson confirming today that an alternative site will be looked at.

They said: "The work commissioned by Hertfordshire County Council to look at possible school sites for the Radlett and Bushey school planning area has identified two possible sites, both shown in the draft plan.

"Work also commissioned by the county council showed that delivery of a secondary school at the Bushey Country Club site would be unviable due to cost, and therefore has not been included.

"Further work is still required to determine which site is the optimum to deliver a new secondary school."

According to the draft local plan, two sites are being considered for a secondary school - land known as Compass Park near Farm Way, and land east of Little Bushey Lane.

The former country club site is owned by the borough council. The land is currently leased to a wedding and events company.
