A police cordon was in place in Watford town centre after a teenager suffered a "wound" to his back.
An eyewitness reported seeing forensic officers in The Parade at around 11.30am on Saturday morning.
They said there was police tape by a row of shops and takeaways right at the top of town where The Parade meets Rickmansworth Road, with officers carrying out investigations.
Hertfordshire Constabulary says it was in connection with an incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A spokesperson for the police force said: "Police were called at around 3.35am on Saturday 28 August, following an incident in The Parade, Watford.
"It was reported that a physical altercation had occurred between a group of males.
"Officers attended and discovered an 18-year-old man nearby, with a wound to his back.
"He was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.
"Enquiries are continuing at this time to establish how the wound was caused and to trace those involved."
