A rare sighting of an otter in Watford's Cassiobury Park has been caught on camera.

The video shows the furry mammal by some water enjoying the scenery and having a good look at the person recording.

Jamie Burnell, known locally by some as the 'Hippie of Cassiobury Park', said it was the first time he had seen one in more than 30 years.

The 40-year-old, whose work involves maintaining rivers, said his "heart is all fuzzy" because it shows that effort is paying off.

"I'm so proud that the River Gade is clean enough and we have the habitat in Cassiobury Park to support their lifestyle," he said.

"They are helping me to remove the invasive species the American crayfish.

"They are a massive help to the ecosystem of the river."

He declined to reveal where exactly it was seen, but added: "My heart is all fuzzy because what I've been doing over the past eight months is helping this endangered species.

"I'm shocked and proud."

Mr Burnell, 40, maintains rivers and parks for the Community Connection Project.

“I absolutely love my job,” he said. “Seeing the effects one man can have on the river.

“I get so much support from regular park users and I'm really thankful to be doing what I'm doing."
