We are told that the Met Line extension may return (Watford Observer, 9/7/21).
Whilst the cost of the original proposal, at £0.5 billion, was never justifiable in terms of usage and payback, there are possible schemes that could be provided at a small fraction of that, including running a tram at street level across the Two Bridges, from Watford Junction along the old alignment, then joining the Metropolitan line in the same fashion as proposed over a Baldwins Lane bridge. Passing through Croxley Met when passengers would change if needed, it would then branch off using live tracks to the Rickmansworth station bay platform. With road-level platforms easy (one on the Clock Tower site), a further platform could cheaply be added behind Watford Hospital to service the Riverwell estate, not requiring any escalators or lifts.
Whilst this, or similar schemes may not be considered at the moment, it emphasises the need to preserve land needed for such a scheme. I.e. Don’t build on the Sun Printers Clock Tower site, or along the boundary of Cinnamond builders (at the Two Bridges Croxley roundabout).
