I write regarding the report in the Watford Observer concerning saving the Sun Clock Tower from destruction.
As someone who spent a lifetime in our town’s printing industry and someone who advocates any cause seeking to preserve Watford’s heritage, I will be backing the call to protect this famous historical old monument.
The Sun Clock Tower commemorates the memory of a once great printing company called Sun Printers that had existed in West Watford for nearly 100 years. By the middle of the 20th century Sun Printers in West Watford, along with Viscount Southwood’s Odhams in North Watford, had put Watford’s printing industry in the position of excelling all others throughout the world.
So, in that respect, it’s imperative that this last small piece of West Watford’s printing heritage is not destroyed but will remain and be remembered by Watford’s future generations.
