Two shopping streets could remain partially closed to vehicles for the foreseeable future.

The social distancing measures introduced in Watford and Rickmansworth town centres last spring look set to remain in place - but one village has seen its measures scrapped.

On May 24, restrictions on a number of parking spaces in Watling Street in Radlett were lifted after local councillor Caroline Clapper told Hertfordshire County Council that the loss of spaces was having a "hugely negative impact" for residents, motorists, disabled users and shopkeepers.

Measures have also been dropped in other parts of Hertfordshire, thanks to the rollout of the vaccination programme, but restrictions will stay for now in a number of high streets including Watford and Rickmansworth.

The county council says social distancing measures have been kept in areas where there has been a "good level of support" for the measures.

In Watford, only certain vehicles can use a section of High Street between Water Lane and King Street and marshals check to ensure this restriction is being obeyed by drivers.

The closure to most motorists, along with planters in parking spaces along Watford High Street, is designed to give pedestrians more space and spread out.

Meanwhile in Rickmansworth, the partial closure of the High Street is still in place and a legal traffic order has been extended until January 2022.

However, shoppers and businesses are being given the opportunity to give their views on whether social distancing measures should be kept or scrapped in their local high street.

Based on this feedback, further changes may be made over the coming weeks or, for some areas, the measures could remain in place for a further 18 months.

Mark Kemp, director of environment and infrastructure, said: "Our priority has been to keep Hertfordshire and our residents safe during the Covid-19 pandemic. We implemented measures to help social distancing and have supported our local businesses to open in line with government guidance."
