The Watford Observer has teamed up with Watford Museum and its curator Sarah Priestley to take a journey back to the town’s past through items or places of historical significance.

The 36th item in our 'history of Watford in 50 objects' takes us back to the scenes two days shy of exactly 76 years ago on May 8, 1945 when Watford celebrated VE Day.

Sarah said: "Victory in Europe was not quite the end of the Second World War but it was an incredible milestone for those who had endured years of war and hardship, and the loss of lives in combat and in the Blitz.

"It was a day to celebrate, with children very much the focus with street parties across the town as well as a party in Cassiobury Park.

"Last year it was lovely that many people in Watford celebrated VE Day with virtual and socially distanced activities, as neighbours and communities came together in new ways to help each other and show kindness during lockdown.
