I am standing as an Independent, as we need strong voices, unconstrained by party politics, to make the changes necessary.
I will fight for:
• People’s needs, especially the young, poor and marginalised, to be prioritised over profit.
• 90 per cent reduction in net zero carbon emissions by 2030, and net zero by 2040.
• A minimum of 30 per cent of Herts land area: publicly-owned, private and farmland, to be managed for the long-term benefit of wildlife and conservation.
• Waste and recycling targets adjusted to make Herts a zero-waste area by 2030.
• Housing plans that put families first, not property companies’ interest.
Simon Diggins OBE is an Independent candidate for the Three Rivers Rural division of Hertfordshire County Council
The greatest challenge and opportunity we face here in Herts is how we respond to climate change and the linked issue, what Sir David Attenborough has described as "the fading of the natural world". These are not ‘Green’ issues. There is no ‘Planet B’ but, unless we take them seriously, and begin to make the necessary changes, now, our children, and grandchildren, will inherit a planet that is unrecognisable and potentially unliveable; that is not a legacy I am prepared to leave.
