Radio 1 presenter Chris Stark says he would commonly message Watford FC players after losing and him having a few drinks.
The 34-year-old DJ from Watford opened up about his childhood memories that made him fall in love with the Hornets, along with revisiting other parts of memory lane in the town.
Speaking to the Do Not Scratch Your Eyes Podcast, he admitted that in the beginning of the season, he was “frustrated” as a fan to see other fans falling out amid what was poorer performance near the start.
He said: “I think when this season started and it wasn’t starting right, the results weren’t coming. It was a baffling one because you look at the team and the team was in my opinion, it was incredible.”
Mr Stark explained he believed the upset reactions from some fans is natural, and is something he has done himself.
He said: “I’ve had a few drinks after a game and we’ve lost, and I message players going what – why? What’s happening?”
Then asked whether he would rant text Troy Deeney, he joked: “Yeah, the poor lads in that team that have given me their number at some point, it’s a huge mistake.”
But he added that they “don’t need it” and is now pleased in the run the fans, team and manager are in.
It was roughly around 1993 /1994 where Mr Stark shares a “faint memory” of first going to a Watford game in the main stand.
In the podcast, he revealed that he did not go to any other games until about five or six years later, as his family was not really into football so he had no one to take him.
It was not until later when he went to school that he started to go to more games and “fell in love with the place”.
In fact Mr Stark went as far to say that he became “obsessed” with it, and would constantly try to save up enough pocket money to get into category C games.
“If it was a fiver I had enough money to do that (go to the game) and have enough money to get like a pie,” he said.
However, if it was a Category A game, then he admitted that he had to have no food.
The rest of the nearly half-an-hour interview mainly involved a quick-fire, where the DJ looked back to other elements of the past.
When asked to pick between Luther Blissett or Troy Deeney – he could not pick one, but did point that in the future people will look back one day and see Deeney as a Watford Legend.
It was also revealed that between Moon Under Water and Lloyds No1 bar (The Colombia Press), Mr Stark preferred the Moon Under Water because “it’s tradition”.
Between Destiny and Oceana, the DJ has fonder memories of Destiny as it was his first club experience and the place of his first DJ job.
Then when asked between The Harlequin and Intu, he said while the Harlequin has amazing memories and a better name, Intu “technically is a better shopping centre”.
