I was there on January 28, 1950 at the fourth round of the FA Cup against Manchester United. I was then 12 years of age. I was there with my brother Harvey, then aged seven. I remember the match very well and have often thought of and referred to it over the years. I particularly recall Charlie Mitten’s missed penalty.
I cant remember the first round cup match against Bromley. It may have been an away game but I certainly remember the second round game against Netherfield. More importantly I was at the third round match against Preston North End, which in those days was a big scalp. The legendary England international Tom Finney was playing against us when we drew 2-2 and learned we got to the fourth round by winning the replay 1-0 away at Deepdale.

The 1950/51 was the first season my dad bought me a season ticket. I had a seat in the old main stand. As a kid I had a child’s ticket and the cost was £3 for the whole season. At the age of 82 I am pleased to say I am still a season ticket holder and sit in the Elton John stand and hope to continue to do so for many years to come.
