A new app which alerts people when they enter a crime hot spot shows the most dangerous places to live and walk in Watford and the surrounding areas.
The 'WalkSafe' app shows how many crimes have been reported in certain areas, the type of crime and when it was reported.
The creators say Walksafe can help users plan safer roots, using the verified police data – published by Police.UK – shown on the map.
The app’s algorithm cycles through the most recent month of police data, refreshing the map twice per week.
The app also scans the road ahead when users are out and about, providing alerts when they walk near areas that have seen reports of serious crime such as knife attacks, sexual assault, mugging and pickpocketing.
The map key works as follows:
• Red- violence/sexual assault
• Black- knife crime
• Light Blue- feeling unsafe
• Yellow- mugging
The app shows that the most common types of crime in Watford are violent and sexual assaults, as well as knife crime.
On Friday, a distressed member of the public alerted police to a fight in Watford town centre between four men; the caller told operators they believed a knife was involved.
And in recent weeks, following the tragic death of Sarah Everard, there have been calls for action to be taken to protect women walking at night in the town.
According to the app, Watford Town centre has seen the most crime reported in recent days.
