Small businesses are being encouraged to sign up to become a part of Watford Market.

Watford Borough Council is investing £250,000 in a bid to create the market in the town centre more "inviting" to customers.

Those running the market say they are looking for the "best street food, art and retail operators to join them to support their Eat Local Shop Local philosophy", joining existing traders and businesses on site.

A coffee shop or café, bakery, unique street food, artisan foods/delicatessen, fashion boutique, designer maker/arts/creative and local brewery/cocktails/speciality gin are the types of businesses the council is appealing to.

Some of the improvements lined up with the quarter of a million pounds investment include new signage, improved entrances, renovation to the containers, and new branding, all designed to make the market "inviting and unique".

Watford Observer:

This is the new branding for Watford Market

Watford mayor Peter Taylor said: "I am determined to make sure we have a thriving market in the future and that’s why we have invested in these brilliant improvements that will enhance the character of the space and also help increase footfall.

"Small businesses are the lifeblood of Watford’s economy, making a vital contribution to the success of our town, so whether you’re an existing business, or you’re an entrepreneur and have an idea that you want to progress, contact us today and benefit from all the changes at the market."

For businesses interested in renting at the market, prices start at £75 per week in shipping container units, although there are discounts available for start-ups.

Ever since the market was moved from Charter Place, accusations have been made that the market has been "tucked away" from the High Street, with calls to make it more appealing or move it altogether.

Working with market operator Market Asset Management, the council had originally budgeted £750,000 for improvements to Watford Market, but this has been cut to £250,000 due to "financial pressures arising from the Covid-19 pandemic".
