Essex and Hertfordshire are braced for the “coldest night in a decade” with temperatures potentially plummeting as low as -13°C in some areas.

The Essex Weather Centre has forecast light south easterly winds, clear skies and freezing temperatures tonight (Wednesday, February 10).

The weather centre says there is a good chance it will be the coldest night in the last ten years.

In a tweet published on Tuesday, Essex Weather Centre said: “Tomorrow night likely to be the coldest for a decade across the region with lows of -13C possible away from the coast.”

A map published by the centre shows the freezing conditions covering large swathes of the east of England, stretching across Essex, London and Hertfordshire.

The BBC has forecast temperatures of -7°C in Watford, and -5° in Epping.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for snow, meaning residents must "be aware" as severe weather is possible.

What to expect

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Small chance of longer travel delays in places with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
