A further update has been given on a road that has been closed for several days due to flooding.
Water Lane in Watford was shut last week after heavy rainfall struck on Saturday, January 30 and Sunday, January 31, leaving standing water on the road and the tunnel full of water.
Despite the pedestrian footpath now open, Water Lane has been closed to motorists for eight days now - and Bushey Liberal Democrats have been pushing for an answer as to why the road has not reopened.
Bushey Liberal Democrats say they were told by the highways team at Hertfordshire County Council that while a vacuum truck has been able to clear water, a faulty pump at the Bushey Hall Road end is causing problems.
In a social media post, Bushey Liberal Democrats said: “We've been told by the highways team at Hertfordshire County Council that on Friday they sent a vacuum truck to the site.
"It cleared water, and cleaned and jetted the tunnel, 'as much as possible'. But the problem is that the pump (culvert) at the Bushey Hall Road end, which should be removing excess water, is not working.
“They don't know if this is because it's blocked, or simply because the of the high water level in the River Colne. Engineers could not get access to the pump housing. Ultimately, we will have to wait until the river level falls before the drainage system can operate effectively again.”
Bushey Liberal Democrats added: “As local councillors we've been urging the county highways team to do everything they can to get the road re-opened, but in the very short term it seems there's not much more which can be done.
“When the flood recedes, though, we need a full review of the site and a far more resilient solution put in place.”
Hertfordshire County Council has previously said it is looking for a “long-term” fix to stop flooding occurring in Water Lane.
A spokesperson from the council said: “We are looking for a long-term solution to this problem, but it’s a complicated issue and something we can’t fix quickly. We would like to assure residents that we are working to improve the situation.”
