Coronavirus in Hertfordshire live: Confirmed cases exceed 1,000

More than 7,000 hospital patients in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus have died, the Department for Health confirmed today.

The death toll in the UK rose to 7,097, with 828 further deaths recorded in England.

Of these 828, 10 were in Hertfordshire, including four patients who were being cared for by West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust. 92 patients have now died in the county.

Today's figures also revealed more than 1,000 people have officially tested positive for Covid-19 in Hertfordshire.

Only London, Birmingham, Hampshire, Essex, Surrey, and Kent have recorded more cases than Hertfordshire's 1,032.

Although today has seen the biggest number of deaths reported by the government, at the daily press briefing at Downing Street, Professor Angela McLean said the spread of the virus is not accelerating.

She said: "This count of new cases in the UK, day by day over the last few weeks, is not accelerating out of control.
"Yesterday, there were 5,492 new cases and the spread of the virus is not accelerating and that is good news."

Meanwhile Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reported to be "sitting up" and his condition is "improving" according to Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Mr Johnson has spent the last two nights in intensive care at St Thomas' in central London.
